Start with the Seeds, Then Let It Grow
I’ve been an avid gardener for the past five years, and the longer I do both web design and gardening, the more I see the connection between starting with a simple website and overall success. In my experience, best gardens don’t start fully bloomed. They start with seeds, healthy soil, and attention. You plant, water, learn, and adjust. Over time, what once was just a patch of dirt turns into something flourishing, useful, and beautiful, and before you know it, a hobby gardener has hundred plants and a full “encyclopedia-esque” knowledge of plants, soil and sunlight and how they work together.
That’s exactly how I’ve watched one of my long-time clients grow their website. Years ago, we launched a simple site: white background, clean black text with a pop of red to match their brand and a form to intake leads. It had everything they needed and nothing more. Over the years, we’ve added new functionality, adjusted the look, improved speed, and updated tools to reflect how their business has grown. They’ve learned how to manage content themselves and even started making regular updates. They’ve developed a true vision of what they want and what their business needs.
And just like with a garden, because we started simple, we laid the foundation for something that could really thrive.
Why You Shouldn’t Try to Launch a Fully-Grown Website Overnight
In my experience, some clients want to plant an entire, mature garden right away. They come with a grand vision: a huge website that looks like their biggest competitor’s or a multi-national brand’s—complete with advanced features, polished animations, dozens of custom graphics, and hundreds of pages.
But that approach rarely works. Similar to a garden, going big too soon creates more work, a different set of issues to manage and risks that present themselves.
Trying to do too much, too soon, usually leads to:
- Delayed launches
- Frustration with learning curves
- Expensive revisions
- And sometimes, complete burnout
WordPress and Divi (the CMS and theme I use most often) are great tools. They can absolutely support growth—but even the best tools take time to learn. Just like trying to grow roses without knowing your soil, going full-tilt with web features before you’ve figured out your basics leads to waste and frustration.
